In mid-December, 1944, the men of the US 106th Infantry Division were holding part of the front line that protruded into Nazi Germany when Hitler launched his massive Wacht Am Rhein offensive. In the opening days of what became known as the Battle of the Bulge, in one of the worst winters in living memory, many GIs would die fighting. Thousands would find themselves surrounded, out of food, low on ammunition, and forced to choose between surrender or attempt a perilous escape. Most laid down their arms.
For some, the fight had just begun.
