By the first week of January, 1945 the massive Nazi offensive that had raged into the Belgian Ardennes was contained. The momentum in the Battle of the Bulge had shifted to the Allied armies gathering to push the Germans back into the Fatherland. But local fighting remained fierce. In the frozen woods just east of Meyerode, an audacious band of GIs took on the SS in the highest tradition of American heroism.
